Exploring the 38 Movement Form

This seminar is dedicated to the study and refinement of the Xiao Yao Zhang 38 Form — a practice that expresses freedom, fluidity, and natural movement.

Throughout the training we will work with the entire form while developing a deeper understanding of how the movements connect, flow, and transform into one continuous expression. Rather than simply memorizing the sequence, the aim is to experience the form as a living process where each movement naturally gives birth to the next.

Through structural work, imagery, and internal principles we will explore how the body can move with greater openness, clarity, and responsiveness.

Topics of the Seminar

1. Learning and Integrating the Whole Form
We will study the complete 38 form of Xiao Yao Zhang, building a clear understanding of its structure, rhythm, and transitions. The goal is to move beyond memorization and allow the form to unfold as one continuous flowing experience.

2. Opening the Chest – Freeing the Spine
Through specific exercises and attention to alignment we explore how releasing the chest and mobilizing the spine allows the body to move with openness and ease, creating fluid and responsive movement.

3. Yin and Yang – Embodying the Opposites
Within the form we explore the dynamic relationship between Yin and Yang — soft and explosive, slow and fast, large and small — learning how these opposites create balance, contrast, and vitality in movement.

4. Learning Through Images and Metaphors
We will work with images and metaphors that help refine the quality of movement. These “pictures” guide the body, deepen intention, and reveal new layers of understanding within familiar movements.
